Credentials

  • • Previous holder (mother), Diana Theodora Adair, Baroness of Kirknewton: per Burke's LGS (2001) p.1461, matriculated 16 Jan 1992, Lyon Reg. 73/75 [not found gazetted in any Roll of the Chiefs notice checked — Burke's-only evidence, baroness of Kirknewton burke's peerage says lord lyon recognised 16 jan 1992 but no gazette mention but not all barons gazetted]. The current holder, Robin Marcus Beresford Adair, appears once in the Gazette in his own right — 'Adair of Kirknewton, younger', 17 November 1997, Lyon Reg. 83/5 (Edinburgh Gazette, 26 May 1998, p.1430) — but this entry carries no chapeau mark and so is not itself evidence of Minor Baron status as inconsistent mark for younger.
  • • Not every baron was gazetted": "Diana Adair, Baroness of Kirknewton, matriculated on 16 January 1992; the notices of 1992 and 1994 that cover that year do not list her"
  • • notices.irishtimes.com/…/2401981
  • • Burke’s Peerage, 107ed. Burke's Peerage (Genealogical Books) Ltd, 2003, p. 2198 column 1 "baroness of Kirknewton"
  • • rec.heraldry.narkive.com/…/baron-of-kirknewton
  • • PLEDGED HEREDITARY TITLE, pledged by the Roll: baronies held across generations are treated by the Roll, for its own purposes, as de facto hereditary. The title becomes unrecognised by the Roll if the barony is later conveyed outside the family, in accordance with Roll policy.

A note on terminology: “Scottish feudal barony” or “feudal title” is an incorrect, defunct historical term for extant barons. Baronies were feudal until 28 November 2004, when feudal baronies were abolished and the dignity of baron was retained — an extant barony is no longer “feudal”. The correct term is Scottish barony or Scottish baron (or baron, lord or earl in the Baronage of Scotland, collectively the minor barons of Scotland); never “feudal baron”. Why the term is defunct →

A barony pledged on the Roll of Scottish Barons is treated by the Roll as hereditary and not in commercio. A pledged barony later conveyed outside the family forfeits its recognition on the Roll in perpetuity. What “Hereditary pledged upon the Roll” means →
