Who we are

The Baronage of Scotland Association, 5 South Charlotte Street, Edinburgh, EH2 4AN, is the data controller for this site (roll.baronage.com) and for www.baronage.com. Questions and requests: secretary@baronage.com.

What the Roll is

The Roll of Scottish Barons is a public verification register of Scottish baronial titles. It records titles that are used in public, the Roll’s verification status for each, and the published sources on which each entry rests. The status labels are explained on Verification & Entry Status; they describe the Roll’s record and are not a judgment on any person.

What we record about people listed on the Roll

the name, and the title or style used in public;
the Roll’s verification status, and any note on the record;
the date the entry was made or last updated;
the published sources for the entry, including links;
a photograph, where one is available (see Photographs below);
for verified barons, the credentials and particulars they supplied at verification, including any family particulars they asked to be shown.

We do not publish home addresses, personal contact details or private documents.

Where the information comes from

From the person, when they verify or submit an entry; and from public sources: the person’s own websites and public profiles, the press, the published list of the Scottish Barony Register, other published registers and directories, and official records such as those of the Court of the Lord Lyon, Registers of Scotland and the Gazette. An entry may be created without the person having asked to be listed.

Why we process it, and the legal basis

We rely on legitimate interests (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)): the Association’s and the public’s interest in an accurate and transparent record of baronial titles used in public, and the right to freedom of expression and information. We record only public use and the Roll’s own status, we publish no private details, and anyone listed may object or ask for a correction (see Your rights). Credentials and particulars supplied by verified barons are published at their request.

Photographs

The Association claims no copyright in photographs of individuals shown on the Roll. A photograph is removed on request from the person shown or from its owner; the written entry remains.

People listed on the Roll

This notice is how we inform people listed on the Roll about the personal data we hold and their rights. It applies to every entry from the time it is published.

Who sees it

Entries are published openly on this site and may appear in search engines. Cooperating organisations that display the Roll on their own sites receive verified entries only. We use service providers to run the site: Cloudflare (hosting and security), Microsoft Clarity (site analytics: pages viewed, clicks and scrolling, so that we can improve the site) and Calendly (booking a verification call). These providers may process data outside the United Kingdom under safeguards recognised in UK law, and their own privacy statements apply to what they collect.

How long we keep it

An entry stays on the Roll while the title is used in public, and afterwards as part of the historical record; entries for the deceased are retained. Correspondence about an entry is kept for as long as needed to deal with the request and any dispute arising from it.

Your rights

You may ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be erased (subject to the limit that applies where processing is necessary for freedom of expression and information), and ask for its processing to be restricted. We answer within one month. We ask for proof of identity only where we have reasonable doubt about who is asking.

Right to object. You may object at any time to the processing of your personal data on the Roll. We consider each objection on its own facts and will stop unless we can show compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests, rights and freedoms.

Anyone listed may ask for a correction of fact, or book a verification call. If you are not satisfied with our response you may complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk, telephone 0303 123 1113.

Cookies and analytics

This site uses Microsoft Clarity to understand how it is used. It sets no advertising cookies. Calendly sets its own cookies only when you use it to book a call.

Changes to this notice

We update this notice when our practices change; the date at the top shows the current version.
