Credentials

  • • Lord Lyon recognised Ramsay William Rainsford Hannay of Kirkdale and of that Ilk as Representer of the Baronial House of Maxwell of Cardoness, matriculating arms with a blue chapeau at LO 65/81 on 31 October 1983. The blue chapeau marks the representer of a baronial family no longer in possession of the barony. It is not recognition as a baron. The barony of the house is Cardoness, not Kirkdale: Kirkdale was a seat and a parish within the barony of Cardoness. George Gordon of Kirkdale was retoured on 20 March 1698 "in baronia de Cardines et parochia de Anwoth" (Retours, Kirkcudbright, no. 171), and the Register of the Great Seal records "partes terrarum et baronie de Cardines ... in parochiis de Kirkmabreck et Kirkdaill" (RMS viii, no. 362) and "Newtoun de Cardines ... in parochia de Anwoth, baronia de Cardines" (RMS vii, Pringle of Bardarroch). No barony of Kirkdale is found in the Crown registers to 1700; the barony’s name differs from the family’s territorial designation. Representer status passes with the headship of the family, now held by David Rainsford Hannay of Kirkdale and of that Ilk.
  • • Rolls of the Chiefs and Heads of Territorial Houses, Officially-Recognised by Lord Lyon King of Arms 31st Oct 1983 (LXV 81), EDINBURGH GAZETTE [minor baron mark]
  • • Burke’s Peerage, 107ed. Burke's Peerage (Genealogical Books) Ltd, 2003, p. 1766 column 2 "Representer of the Baronial House of Maxwell of Cardoness" (so recognised by Ld Lyon and matric at LO 31 Oct 1983)

A note on terminology: “Scottish feudal barony” or “feudal title” is an incorrect, defunct historical term for extant barons. Baronies were feudal until 28 November 2004, when feudal baronies were abolished and the dignity of baron was retained — an extant barony is no longer “feudal”. The correct term is Scottish barony or Scottish baron (or baron, lord or earl in the Baronage of Scotland, collectively the minor barons of Scotland); never “feudal baron”. Why the term is defunct →

A barony pledged on the Roll of Scottish Barons is treated by the Roll as hereditary and not in commercio. A pledged barony later conveyed outside the family forfeits its recognition on the Roll in perpetuity. What “Hereditary on the Roll” means →
